Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia has announced the commencement of a two-week field inspection tour by the ASEAN Defense Attaché Observer Group (Interim), aimed at observing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday morning, August 3, 2025, at the Office of the Council of Ministers, Her Excellency General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, stated that the observer team, led by Malaysia’s Defense Attaché and including representatives from six ASEAN member states — Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam — has officially begun its observation to various locations, including Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces.

This marks the second round of ASEAN military observers since tensions escalated between Cambodian and Thai armed forces. The current mission stems from a consensus reached at the special meeting held on July 28, 2025, in Malaysia, which resulted in a bilateral ceasefire agreement.

“The representative will visit several locations to observe the implementation of ceasefire agreement including Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear Province which had been mainly affected by the arm clashes between Cambodian and Thai Military ,” H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata confirmed. “This activity is the follow up on the special meeting on July 28, 2025 in Malaysia which let to agreement on the ceasefire and has so far improved the situation at the border. During this visit the ASEAN Defense Attaché Observer Group (Interim) led by Malaysian Defense Attaché will carry out its mission over a full two-week period.”

She emphasized that the participation of multiple ASEAN nations demonstrates a collective aspiration for lasting peace, stability, and cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand.

“The participation of these partner countries reflects a common desire to ensure the ceasefire is successful and lasting with the goal of bringing back peace, stability, cooperation and development for the benefit of the people of both countries,” she added.

The Ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s dedication to a peaceful resolution and acknowledged ASEAN’s pivotal role in fostering constructive engagement and confidence-building measures.
